Stray Dogs, the 29th graphic novel by Croatian-born artist Danijel Zezelj (the Gardner’s 50th Artist-in-Residence), takes shape as the memoir of a woman journalist. Part illustrated biography, part dreamlike musing, Zezelj’s richly descriptive narrative-in-drawings is told through a visually eclectic mix of individuals and settings, from moody cityscapes to shadowed interiors. His story takes on themes of exile, solitude, illness, displacement, and growing old in America. Zezelj’s project is a boldly impressionistic representation of the world as he sees it.
Published in conjunction with Zezelj’s exhibition at the Gardner Museum, Stray Dogs, June 24 through August 21, 2005. Texts include an interview with the artist by Pieranna Cavalchini, Curator of Contemporary Art, Gardner Museum; and introduction by Anne Hawley, Norma Jean Calderwood Director, Gardner Museum.
